(The No Longer) Traveling Moleskin
Ive been looking forward to taking part in the Just Us Traveling Moleskin project, where each member takes the specified theme of Secrets and Lies and makes their mark in the book. Unfortunately the book didn’t make it to my door mat before the comp closed. But here was my idea regarding Secrets & Lies: ‘A Cockney Spat’.

Initially I was thinking about the different types of lies, white lies/bluffing/a big fat whopper, and slang words used ieĀ porky pie/lie, which led me on to look at Cockney rhyming slang. Cockney rhyming slang began as a secret language formed in the London underworld from the 1850’s, when villains coded speech to confuse police and eavesdroppers. Since then the slang has continued to grow to reflect new trends and wider usage. And this is what I wanted to portray.

Old Poster

A local action group called the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC) aim to promote and preserve the diversity and culture of the area. Yet it has been brought to my attention that they run the risk of squashing the diversity and spontaneity through creating a yellow and black identity. Looking at old soviet posters for inspiration to my work, I loved how I couldn’t actually read any of the Russian language and saw how I could play on this by using the acronyms PRSC, BCC (Bristol City Council) and Versus (Vs).
The text relates to a conversation I had with a BCC street cleaner who described how he thought the group were taking matters into their own hands. He explained that he should technically remove or paint over the PRSC yellow paint which has been illegally applied to the street bins. But if he were to do so he would be met with hostility from the group.
Colour Definitions of an Area

As the paint used by the PRSC has begun to define the area I have looked at the different ways this particular yellow could be represented; through its different numerical values and its paint name.
