‘Harry Blades’ hair raising photo shoot
I was recently asked to take part in a quirky photo shoot for a cool new hair salon on Christmas Steps, Bristol. A cautionary warning to those of you I have not yet met, you may be alarmed at my bright orange hair, combined with the silly styles I was given!

Tis the season
Snow finally touched down in the South West on Sunday night! This is the scene that greeted me from my window.

…and if you are lucky enough to work with me you will have sampled the delicious delights of my Rudolf cakes. Happy Christmas all.

Issue One Magazine out now
Awesome new logo to go with the cool new cultural mag. Designed by Joe Coleman

DO
Here’s the DO blog by fellow UWE-ers, who are now proud junior fellows. The site documents all of their fun exploits! I have also been enjoying reading the ‘D’ of DO (Dylan and Olie) @ hello dylan.
Red
The titled exhibition was really really good! The best SL exhibition yet I’d say. Plus in the side room the Bristol themed competition had really impressive entries this year. Well Done everyone! My two ‘Red’ faves, coincidentally hanging next to each other were by Lisa and Shell (above the chair to the right).

Work Stuff
Jeff’s chopper greets us every morning at FSX HQ! So cool.

I recently came across this piece of emergency equipment in the kitchen…
‘Open in case of bacon sandwich’

*Note to self – must get phone with better camera for quick snaps
Here’s my new work colleague, I spend all day with this fella and he’s yet to be named. Suggestions welcome.

Impatience
Finally the value of impatience is realised and I can feel better about being so!

Bristol Balloon Fiesta 10/8/09
The impressive sight of Saturday evenings launch.

Today 5/8/09
For a brief moment today the sun appeared and a huge flock of butterflies descended onto one particular plant in my garden. There were about 15 at one point and they were beautiful!

St Pauls Carnival
This year was only my second time attending the festivities, but I am in no doubt that this is my favourite event of the Bristol calendar, even more so when the sun is out. This year featured yet another brilliant parade and joyous atmosphere.

Now Showing 23/06/09
The UWE graduate show kicked off with a spectacular private view last Friday. Upstairs in the Animation section there was brilliant live music and a lounge area. Outside visitors were enjoying a drink and the hog roast in the evening sun.

While there were equally busy numbers inside all buildings…

Banksy versus Bristol Museum (versus the 45 minute queue) 13/6/09
I rolled up to Bristol Museum today for the public opening of Bansky’s biggest show-to date, to investigate all the press hype and excitement. The fact that there was a growing queue running down the road didn’t really bother me as there was lovely sunshine and a steady movement towards the front doors. We were slightly skeptical that once we got in the building there might be further hidden twists and turns of queuing visitors, just like that at a theme park, luckily Bristol Museum did not employ these sneaky tactics. As soon as we entered we were viewing Bansky’s altered sculptures left right and centre. Overall there were many highlights including the main exhibition room at the back of the museum which featured the stencils used to paint some of Banksy’s most infamous images. One of my favourite paintings was in this room and showed a huge scene of monkeys debating in the house of commons. Next door a darkened space featured a number of absolutely brilliant animatronics, in particular a caged monkey which was incredibly realistic at times.

Bansky’s people had also merged his works into other areas of the museum, for example in the classical paintings and even taxidermy exhibits. It was great fun walking round looking at other works and then trying to spot the hilarious intruders. The free show is on display for the next three months and I would definitely recommend a visit.
My ‘Just us’ representation 7/6/09
A collective known as Just us have added me to their design graduate showcase, in doing so they have created a visual representation of me in the form of a silhouette.
Launch 5/6/09
Last night howies played host to the launch of the publication ‘81 People’ and the design blog ‘Type now here‘. There was a great turn out to view these third year projects and also a chance to view second year type and print projects which were very impressive. The publication will also be on view at the UWE Degree Show and D&AD New Blood Show later this month.

81 People 29/5/2009
The graphic design final year publication is out! Featuring work produced through one day workshops by the year group as a whole… and some cracking pie charts by yours truly!

Photo Marathon Exhibition 23/5/09
After taking part in the Photo Marathon a week previous, myself and fellow marathon photographers were able to see the very impressive sight of all 2000 images up in the South Bank Centre, Bedminster this Saturday. For those unfamiliar with the concept of the Photo Marathon you are given a disposable camera and a sheet of themes to be shot in list order. I will be posting some of my images up here shortly.

‘Cat Fap’ Comment 14/5/09
Picture of comment book at Street life exhibition which features my images taken looking through a peephole, letterbox and cat flap! See photography page for images.

PHEW! 7/4/09
Looks like it might not all be doom and gloom for designers in the economic downturn, as the online article ‘Britain’s Businesses Turn to Designers to Beat the Recession’ explains.
BABE 6/4/09
The Bristol Artist Book Event was on at the Arnolfini this weekend, and there was a huge amount of beautiful printed books and material on show. Unfortunately I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to wander around taking in everyone’s work. Bit of a shame it’s a only a two day event too! But I’m glad I made it down even just for a wee while!
Crimes of Passion at the RWA 23/3/09
This weekend I popped into the Royal West of England Academy for the opening of the Crimes of Passion graffiti exhibition. I loved how the artists had painted directly onto many of the walls of such a potentially pretentious building. Holding the exhibition in this building highlights how strong the Bristol graffiti scene is, how talented the artists can be, and backs the case for graffiti as art, not as vandalism.

Here is some older show and tell that I hadn’t thought to put on here earlier!…
‘Looking Up’ Exhibition at Photographique
The first Second Look Members show of 2009 started with a great opening night (12/3/09), and provided a varied response to the unifying theme of looking up taken on by SL members.

Snow!!
With all that snow I found some brilliant sculptures hiding at the end of a quiet street or two, these animals were in the children’s play area of St. Andrews Park back in February.

Weapon of Choice
We have been storing these large pieces in our living room for quite a while now, they certainly make a focal point in the midst of our drab decor! I often find myself examining all the smaller details created by the weapon of choice guys.

NYC 07

Guggenheim; wasn’t too keen on the exhibition but the building’s architecture was amazing!
At the American Institute of Graphic Arts – Chalk board wall.

Karlssonwilker Studio, where there seemed to be big emphasis on the fuse-ball table and a tournament between local designers.

Sketchbook
I’ve just come across an old sketchbook from my first year of uni, here is some of its random contents…
